From Stiff to Stellar: How I Create Headshots That Feel Authentically You
Most people dread headshots. You imagine stiff poses, forced smiles, and photos that don’t quite feel like you. Maybe you’ve had that experience before, standing in front of a camera, unsure what to do with your hands, hoping it will be over quickly.
My goal is to change all of that.
Headshots don’t have to feel awkward or impersonal. In fact, they can be one of the most affirming experiences (when done well). The kind where you walk away thinking, “That actually felt easy… and that really looks like me.”
The True You
It all begins before you ever step in front of the camera.
I like to start with a simple, thoughtful conversation. We talk about what you do, who you serve, and how you want people to feel when they see your photo. Are you warm and approachable? Confident and polished? Creative and a little playful?
There’s no one-size-fits-all version of “professional.” Your headshot should reflect your version.
That clarity shapes everything, from the lighting and backdrop to the overall mood of your session. Instead of guessing, we’re creating with intention.
A Comfortable Experience
On the day of your session, you don’t need to come in knowing how to pose or what to do. That’s my job. On shoot day, I take the pressure off. No “say cheese,” and no rigid posing. Instead, I guide you with simple, natural prompts. Tiny movements, shifts in posture, and real expressions that come from conversation, not performance. Think of it more like hanging out with a friend who happens to have a camera.
I gently guide you through the entire process with simple direction that feels natural and easy. Small shifts in posture, a relaxed turn of the shoulders, a genuine reaction during conversation. Those are the moments that create the most authentic images.
There’s no pressure to perform. No stiff instructions. No “perfect smile.”
Instead, we create space for real expressions to show up.
Easy Lighting Setup
Lighting and background play a huge role, too. I choose setups that flatter your features and fit your brand, whether that’s clean and modern, soft and editorial, or vibrant and energetic. Every detail, from what you wear to how your hair falls, is there to support your story, not distract from it.
It Feels More Like a Conversation
Most people are surprised by how quickly they forget about the camera.
We chat. We laugh a little. You settle in.
And somewhere in that process, something shifts and you stop trying so hard. Your shoulders relax. Your expression softens. That’s when the magic happens.
Those are the images that feel effortless and genuine. They are the ones that truly represent you.
Thoughtful, Flattering Details
Every detail of your session is chosen with care.
Lighting is designed to be soft and flattering, enhancing your natural features without feeling harsh or overly dramatic. Backgrounds are selected to complement your personal brand, whether you’re drawn to something light and airy, clean and modern, or a bit more expressive.
We’ll also consider wardrobe, textures, and tones so everything works together seamlessly. Nothing is randomly placed, yet nothing feels overdone.
A Light, Honest Edit
Finally, I edit with a light touch. I will remove temporary distractions (like a blemish or lint on a blazer), but I will never over-retouch you into someone else. Your skin should still look like skin. Your eyes should still look like yours.
When it comes to editing, my approach is simple: you should still look like you.
I’ll remove temporary distractions like a blemish or a stray hair—but I won’t smooth away what makes you unique. Your skin will still have texture. Your expressions will still feel real.
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s authenticity, polished just enough to feel confident and camera-ready.
Headshots You’ll Actually Love
In the end, what you receive is more than just a “good photo.”
It’s an image that feels like you on your best day, confident, relaxed, and completely yourself. The kind of headshot you’re proud to use on your website, LinkedIn, or marketing because it truly represents who you are.
The result: headshots that feel confident, comfortable, and true to who you are—photos you’re proud to share because they finally look like the real you.
If you’ve been putting off updating your headshot, this is your sign that it doesn’t have to feel stressful or uncomfortable.
I’d love to create something beautiful with you—whether in my in-home studio in Raleigh, NC or at your place of work. I look forward to hearing from you!
